On 21 March, a working meeting between experts of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU) and State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SSTC NRS) and representatives of the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (NRPA) was held at SSTC NRS to discuss a number of topics related to cooperation conducted under the respective agreement since 2014.
Oleksandr Pecherytsa, SSTC NRS First Deputy Director, presented the status of regulatory documents developed under bilateral cooperation that govern the safety of radioactive waste management, radiation protection in medicine and enhanced control over uranium milling and processing plants.
Malgorzata Sneve, Director of NRPA Regulatory Cooperation Programme, outlined further plans of cooperation and, in particular, informed about two international workshops planned by NRPA on management of legacy radioactive waste and materials.
In addition, SNRIU and SSTC NRS experts discussed important areas of cooperation with the Norway colleagues. In particular, they discussed current cooperation on decommissioning of nuclear installations, management of radiation sources and improvement of regulatory requirements for transport of radioactive materials.
Finally, the SNRIU representatives provided the Norway colleagues with new high-priority proposals for the near future related to emergency preparedness and emergency documentation.
The next working meeting between SNRIU/SSTC NRS and NRPA to discuss new areas of joint activities will be arranged in late May – early June 2017 in Oslo (Norway).
