The new book “Ukrainian Post-Apocalypse” will be presented in the National University “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” on 1 February 2018. The collection includes 17 pieces of flash fiction of modern Ukrainian writers. Each story is a kind of call to humanity to be cautious in using potentially hazardous technologies, including nuclear ones.
“The book was written upon the contest dedicated to the 31-st commemoration of the Chernobyl accident”, Press Secretary of the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SSTC NRS) Tetiana Verbytska commented. “Over a month, pieces of different genres were accepted: science fiction, fantasy, stories. The following subjects were required: human-made disasters, Ukraine and the world, and Chornobyl”.
In total, 17 pieces were submitted for the contest. A competitive jury of well-known writers decided further on the winner. Artur Zakordonets with his story “Strange Nights Happen Here” won the contest. His story together with other works submitted for the contest was included into the collection “Ukrainian Post-Apocalypse”.
“Frankly speaking, I was attracted by a bright banner to participate in the SSTC NRS contest. In addition, the contest fits me by genre, because fantasy and science fiction is my topic. Moreover, I was in the loop a little, because in 1988-1989, I did my military services near the Chernobyl in Ovruch belonging to the voluntary resettlement area. I saw a lot: abandoned villages, deserted houses; talked to people. Actually, all this is reflected in my story”, winner of the contest writer Arthur Zakordonets said.
Not everyone is able to highlight radiation safety issues through the prism of art. However, exactly word and artistic image may motivate people hundred times better than any speech of a political leader or a research paper. The need for responsible use of natural resources and environment protection, accuracy in everything related to new potentially hazardous technologies, prevention of using nuclear technologies for military purposes, such complex issues transformed through the prism of art might become more understandable and comprehensible.
“Since researchers of issues on the edge of sciences: art and energy were quite a few and any state institution did not issue similar stories in Ukraine, we decided to take initiative and try. Actually, thus, collection “Ukrainian Post-Apocalypse” was published, - Tetiana Verbytska summarizes. “I hope it will leave a good mark in the history of Ukraine”.
Famous Ukrainian writers and literary critics, musicians, researchers, workers of culture, power engineers will visit the presentation of the book. Everyone will be able to add a good book with authors’ autographs to their own library. This evening we will remind once again that the symbiosis of science and culture is not only possible, but even necessary.
* The collection “Ukrainian Post-Apocalypse” is dedicated to the outstanding figure in the sphere of nuclear and radiation safety, Serhii Bozhko, who passed away prematurely a year ago. The memory of him will remain forever in the hearts of colleagues and relatives and live in the book “Ukrainian Post-Apocalypse”.
