Weekly workshop “Communication for Safety by the Regulatory Body” was started today during which representatives of the nuclear and radiation safety regulators from Western and Eastern Europe will exchange experience and lessons learned to improve communication with the public in order to enhance transparency of their activities.
The Chairman of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine Hryhorii Plachkov opened the event. “The development of an open democratic society presupposes above all respect of the constitutional rights of the public, in particular, free access to information on the environmental conditions including the data on nuclear and radiation safety state”, Hryhorii Plachkov said. “We as the regulator in the field of nuclear and radiation safety are obliged to inform the public on our activities and involve them in making decisions concerning issues that may affect the environmental conditions”.
The Chairman of the Ukrainian regulator also noted that this workshop is a unique platform for experience feedback and exchange of lessons learned between representatives of regulatory bodies of different countries related to public notification.
Representatives of the regulatory authorities of Ukraine, Albania, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Georgia, Greece, Lithuania, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Tajikistan and Macedonia take part in this workshop.
The workshop is conducted with support of the IAEA in cooperation with the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine.
