On 24-25 October 2018, acceptance tests of the accident and post-accident monitoring system (PAMS) for Khmelnitsky NPP Unit 2 were performed on the site of the Research and Production Association “Impulse” (Severodonetsk) in the framework of the “Comprehensive (Integrated) Safety Improvement Program for Ukrainian NPPs”.
Representatives of KhNPP (Netishyn), SSTC NRS Kharkiv Subsidiary and LLC “I&C CERTCENTR” (Kharkiv) and Impulse experts participated in the acceptance tests.
Ivan Chervonenko, senior researcher of SSTC NRS Kharkiv Subsidiary, noted that the acceptance tests were intended to confirm PAMS compliance with the terms of reference, design documentation and regulations on nuclear and radiation safety and to assess PAMS readiness to be supplied, installed and pre-commissioned at NPP.
“During the tests, previous testing results were considered, requirements for the performance of functions, technical control and diagnostics were experimentally checked and compliance of technical documentation with regulations on nuclear and radiation safety was verified”, the expert said.
The tests were carried out in compliance with the program and procedure agreed by the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine.
Based on the acceptance testing results, the Commission stated that the system completely met the specified requirements and was ready to be supplied to KhNPP Unit 2.
PAMS is an information two-level normal operation system important to safety. It is designed to ensure reliable monitoring of power unit process parameters in the scope sufficient for management of a beyond design-basis accident. In particular, for the management of a severe accident involving failure of regular parameter monitoring systems.
The software and hardware and instrumentation and control (I&C), constituting the upper and lower levels, provide data on temperature in the containment and spent fuel pool, coolant level and temperature, pressure above the core and in the containment and level in the containment sumps and spent fuel pool.
