Dmytro Gumenyuk Head of the SSTC NRS Safety Analysis Division
On 12 and 13 November, a working meeting was held in the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety (SSTC NRS) within project “Support to the SNRIU in Strengthening and Ensuring Reliability of Severe Accident Analysis Models Based on Current EU Experience and Fukushima Lessons”. Representatives of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine, SSTC NRS, GRS (Germany), LEI (Lithuania) and IRSN (France) participated in the meeting.
The latest approaches to develop models for computer analyses of severe accident progress in the reactor and spent fuel pool were discussed during the meeting. In particular, a number of specific issues on severe accident simulation in the spent fuel pool using thermohydraulic computer codes, consideration of the results of experimental studies of the processes accompanying severe accident progress, as well as approaches to verification and validation of computer models have been raised.
“Support of European partners is very important, since they have considerable experience in severe accident simulation and access to new experimental studies in this area. The use of advanced practices and experimental data will allow developing improved models and increasing reliability of calculation results, which in turn strengthen SNRIU capabilities regarding severe accidents”, Head of the SSTC NRS Safety Analysis Division Dmytro Gumenyuk said.
